For most visitors the shoulder season wins. Late May, June and September give you warm water and reliable sun without August prices or August crowds. Peak summer is the safe bet only if you need guaranteed heat or you travel during the school holidays. Winter is for cheap, quiet trips built around towns, food and walking rather than the beach.

A few caveats on these numbers. The winter lows come from Palma's inland airport station; on the coast and in the towns, midwinter nights are milder, usually 6 to 8C. Menorca runs slightly cooler and much windier than the others, and its sea peaks closer to 25C than 26C. Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana is a world apart, far wetter and cooler than the coast, with up to 1,200mm of rain a year and occasional snow on the high peaks.

When is the sea warm enough to swim?

The Balearic sea is slow to warm and slow to cool, lagging the air by about a month. It sits at its coldest from January to March, around 14C and too cold for casual swimming, and barely moves through spring: roughly 16C in April and 18C in May, still bracing for most people.

June reaches about 20 to 22C, comfortable for many swimmers but cool first thing in the morning. The reliable swimming window opens in July at about 24C and peaks near 26C in August. Mallorca: seasons and best time to visit

Mallorca is the largest and most varied island, and it really has two seasons that do not quite overlap: a beach season from June to mid September, and a hiking season in the Serra de Tramuntana in spring and autumn, when the mountains are cool enough to walk. Coastal Palma averages summer highs near 31C, and October is the wettest month at around 70mm. The Serra de Tramuntana is far wetter and cooler than the coast, with up to 1,200mm of rain a year and occasional snow on the high peaks.
